Gowan Distributors Limited, the official Opel distributor in Ireland, has issued a voluntary recall for certain Opel Corsa and Opel Mokka vehicles. The recall, announced on 24 September 2024, concerns a serious defect in the steering rack that may cause steering stiffness or, in extreme cases, complete steering blockage.
Affected Vehicles
- Models: Opel Corsa, Opel Mokka (also includes some Vauxhall Mokka units)
- Production dates: 9 April 2024 – 18 May 2024
- Number affected in Ireland: 3 vehicles
- Distributor: Gowan Distributors Limited (Opel Ireland)
Details of the Fault
The defect involves vehicles fitted with a steering rack that does not meet specification standards.
The steering issue arises from:
- Crack in the worm wheel inside the reducer of the electric power steering motor.
- High friction steering due to the defect.
- Potential detachment of plastic parts from the worm wheel.
Over time, the crack can widen, leading to progressive steering stiffness. In the worst case, this can result in steering blockage, posing a significant safety risk.
Risks
If the steering rack fails, drivers may experience:
- Increased difficulty turning the steering wheel.
- Loss of vehicle control due to steering lock-up.
This can dramatically raise the risk of an accident, particularly at higher speeds or in emergency maneuvers.
What Owners Should Do
Owners of potentially affected Opel Corsa and Opel Mokka vehicles will be contacted directly by Opel Ireland. They should:
- Arrange an appointment with an authorised Opel service centre.
- Have the steering rack inspected and replaced if necessary.
- Note that all recall work will be carried out free of charge.
