Toyota Highlander Recall in Ireland Over Rear Seat Safety Defect

Toyota Ireland has issued a voluntary recall for certain Toyota Highlander vehicles due to a defect in the second-row rear seat frame. Announced on 31 October 2024, the recall affects 183 vehicles in Ireland. The defect may increase the risk of injury to rear-seat passengers in the event of a crash.

Affected Vehicles

  • Model: Toyota Highlander
  • Production dates: 6 December 2019 – 12 January 2024
  • Number affected in Ireland: 183 vehicles
  • Distributor: Toyota Ireland

Details of the Fault

The affected Highlander vehicles are equipped with second-row 60/40 split fold-down bench seats.

  • These seats include a seat-back mid-bar within the frame.
  • Certain points on the 40% side of the mid-bar may not have been manufactured with the required minimum end radius as per UN ECE R.21 standards.
  • Although the mid-bar is covered by foam, the incorrect end radius may become a hazard in specific crash situations.

If a crash occurs while one seat section (60% or 40%) is folded and the other is upright, a rear occupant could come into contact with the improperly manufactured mid-bar, leading to an increased risk of injury.

Risks

  • Rear passenger injury risk during a collision.
  • Hazard is highest when only one side of the split seat is stowed.
  • Does not affect the vehicle’s drivability but compromises occupant safety in certain crash conditions.

What Owners Should Do

Toyota Ireland will contact owners of affected vehicles. Recommended steps:

  • Arrange an appointment with an authorised Toyota service centre.
  • Have the seat frame inspected and corrected as required.
  • Repairs will be carried out free of charge.
