Hyundai IONIQ 5 & IONIQ 6 Recall in Ireland: ICCU Fault Could Cause Power Loss

On 28 May 2024, Hyundai Cars Ireland issued a voluntary recall affecting certain Hyundai IONIQ 5 (NE) and Hyundai IONIQ 6 (CE) vehicles. The defect involves the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), which manages the 12-volt auxiliary battery and low-voltage systems. Under specific conditions, the ICCU may fail, potentially leading to a total loss of motive power.

Affected Vehicles

  • Models: Hyundai IONIQ 5 (NE), Hyundai IONIQ 6 (CE)
  • Number of Vehicles Affected in Ireland: 3,846
  • Production Dates:
    • IONIQ 5 (NE): 13 January 2021 – 29 February 2024
    • IONIQ 6 (CE): 28 September 2022 – 4 March 2024

Details of the Fault

The issue relates to the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU):

  • The ICCU charges the 12-volt auxiliary battery and powers low-voltage accessories.
  • Under certain electrical load conditions, the ICCU may suffer internal damage.
  • This can cause the ICCU fuse to open, leaving the system in fail-safe mode.
  • If the vehicle continues to be driven in this state, with the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminated, it may eventually suffer a complete loss of motive power.

Risks

  • Loss of motive power while driving, increasing crash risk.
  • Vehicle may stall unexpectedly, creating a hazard on motorways or busy roads.
  • Reduced vehicle safety due to compromised low-voltage functions.

What Owners Should Do

Hyundai recommends that affected owners:

  1. Contact their Hyundai dealer immediately for inspection.
  2. Dealers will test and, if necessary, repair or replace the ICCU.
  3. The recall work will be carried out free of charge.
