Hyundai Tucson Recall in Ireland Over Rear Window Safety Defect

Hyundai Cars Ireland has announced a voluntary recall for certain Hyundai Tucson passenger vehicles due to a potential rear window safety fault. The issue, identified in May 2024, affects a small batch of Tucson models manufactured between 30 November 2022 and 5 April 2023.

This recall was reported to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) and aims to address a defect in the rear electric window lifter trapping protection system, which may not function as intended.

A total of 84 Hyundai Tucson vehicles in the Republic of Ireland are affected by this recall. Owners of the impacted models will be directly contacted by Hyundai Cars Ireland.

Details of the Fault

The identified safety defect involves the rear electric window lifter system. The trapping protection feature, designed to detect obstructions and prevent injury when the window closes automatically, may not operate correctly.

This means that, under certain conditions, the automatic vertical window closing system could fail to stop or reverse when an object or person’s limb is detected — increasing the risk of injury.

Risks and Safety Concerns

If the trapping protection system fails, fingers, hands, or other body parts could become caught in the closing window, especially when using the automatic close function.

While no injuries have been reported so far in Ireland, Hyundai is urging all affected owners to arrange an inspection and software update as soon as possible.

What Owners Should Do

Owners of affected Tucson vehicles will be contacted directly by Hyundai Cars Ireland or their local authorized Hyundai dealer.

The recall remedy includes:

  • Inspection of the rear window lifter software.
  • Software update or system adjustment to ensure the trapping protection operates correctly.

All recall work will be carried out free of charge. Hyundai recommends that owners avoid using the automatic window closing feature until the recall repair has been completed.

  1. My 242 Hyundai Tucson electronics have been acting up recently and 2 days ago while driving the automatic braking system activated for no reason which caused the two rear wheels to go on fire… luckily I had a bottle of water in the car and was able to extinguish the flames on both wheels…
I would very much appreciate any advice or suggestions as to what course of action I should pursue against Hyundai main dealer due to this serious malfunction etc with my car.
    Many thanks for any advice,
    Tony.

    • Hi Tony,

Thank you for sharing this — that sounds like a very serious and frightening experience, and we’re glad to hear you were able to stop safely and put out the fire.

Based on what you’ve described, an unexpected activation of the automatic braking system combined with a fire at the rear wheels is not normal behaviour and should be treated as a critical safety issue.

Here are some important steps you should consider:

      1. Do not drive the vehicle
Until the cause is fully identified, it would be safest to avoid using the car. A repeat incident could pose a significant risk.

      2. Contact your Hyundai dealer immediately (in writing)
Report the incident formally and request a full inspection. Make sure to:

      Describe exactly what happened
      Include the fire incident
Ask for a written diagnosis and report

      3. Escalate to Hyundai Ireland
If the dealer response is unsatisfactory, contact Hyundai Ireland customer care directly. This ensures the issue is logged at manufacturer level.

      4. Report it to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC)
Given the safety implications, this may qualify as a reportable defect. They can advise you on your consumer rights.

      5. Consider an independent inspection
If possible, having the vehicle assessed by a qualified independent engineer can help support your case, especially if you pursue a complaint or claim.

      6. Keep evidence
Photos of the damage, timestamps, and any correspondence with the dealer will be very important.

While it’s too early to determine the exact cause, issues involving electronic driver assistance systems or braking components can sometimes be linked to sensor faults, software errors, or mechanical problems — all of which should be thoroughly investigated by Hyundai.

If you’re not getting a satisfactory response, you may also wish to seek legal advice, particularly given the fire risk involved.

Please keep us updated on how you get on — cases like this are important for other owners to be aware of.

      Stay safe,
